After months of hard battle, President Obama’s healthcare document went live yesterday morning on the White House website, reports the Irish Times.
The document has arguably been the most central debate in U.S. politics over the first year of his administration. An interesting footnote which highlights this is that the document itself is presented on the website in a manner which signifies its importance. It is packaged well, endearing its accessibility to the reader. You can practically avoid the document itself and just focus on learning what it means for you!
This agenda setting format enhances greatly on the emerging policy consensus within the Obama adminstration. We are led to believe that domestic and foreign policy will proceed along a tough but fair inclusive format. This particular episode highlights a flaw in such a model. It remains one which is meant to be didactic. It is inclusive yet instructive. This will no doubt be packaged itself as good leadership in a time of uncertainty. It is the efficiency which the U.S. craves at the moment, but given the generality of explanation any attempt by the Obama administration to explain inclusive policy as non-instructive will soon be exposed by the U.S. audience. Efficiency it may well be but it might just be the wrong kind.
